taking a break

I have thoroughly enjoyed the last 662 days of posting a daily record of WWII from 70 years ago. Unfortunately, the time commitment is just too great for me to keep up with all the events in so many theatres as the war picks up pace.

I will create an entry for each date to provide a framework to fill in details later. I will no longer post a detailed update every day, although I will do this as often as I can. Some days, however, there will be no information posted. I know this will disappoint many of you who appreciate the daily posts and it will be frustrating to see blank entries or ‘empty’ dates. For this I apologise.

I am not giving up on this project completely, only delaying it. I intend to return to this later, when I have more time on my hands. Also, I will continue reading and writing (at least in note form) so there will be some framework for a future effort. I will also use the time to find grant funding to give this daily history a permanent website rather than using Facebook and blogger.

Finally, thank you all for your support over the last 644 days. I hope together we can continue following the events of WWII.

Please feel free to record your thoughts using comments to this post.

  2. Where do you get your information to make the posts from? Another website to follow on the days that you are taking a break?

  8. Fabulous blog...looked forward to it each day. I do realize how complicated this blog becomes, once war breaks out on multiple fronts...and i do mean multiple.....e.g. with the invasion of Russia. Overwhelming, yes?
Thanks for your efforts so far.
    Blessings

  9. I have had your blog on my RSS feed ever since the Battle of Britain. I haven't been able to even read it every day, so I can just imagine what a time commitment it is to write every day. Just wanted to say that the blog is great and thanks for what you have done - but as one of your previously nameless faceless readers, I totally understand.

  10. Thank you. I have used some of your information to update my compilation. I have 78 pages of events from '39 through '45 which I post on my Facebook page. People are interested and appreciate the information. I would be happy to share my compilation with you as well. I undrstand the "break." All the best.

  16. Um, hate to say this, but no unfortunately. If I would, it would end with a disaster in time management :/

I fully understand why you are taking a break..

  17. Many thanks for your hard work - much appreciated. Will have to go back to relying on my own memories but it has been great reading about the wider picture on all fronts.
Feel sure there is information out there even if it means going back to the library! I can visualise things like the flying bombs but the photographs on your page have been wonderful as well. Thank you again, Mary Smith

  18. Echoing the comments here, I've enjoyed it and learned a lot. I will miss the daily posts.

I'd be happy to donate a few bucks via paypal.

In the meantime, thewwiiproject.com is also a great informational read. It summarizes a headline or two each day from 70 years ago. The biggest difference I've seen is that since the news cycle was slower in the '40s, events get posted a day or more after they actually happened and, of course, the first reports were often erroneous.

It is very interesting, though, to absorb the war the way a newspaper reader in the '40s may have done.

Good luck and hope to see the site churning again soon.
